Fire Academy
Fire Academy is the cornerstone of all the knowledge firefighters learn throughout their career.
It is here that our Recruits are taught the basic skills and knowledge of the craft, and it is here that they come to know the dangers, physical and mental demands, and rewards of the Fire Service.
Our Fire Academy runs from January - August.
It is held twice a week with classroom sessions on Tuesday/Thursday Nights from 6-10 and Skills Day sessions on Saturday from 8-5.
In the first six months at Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue you will have to dedicate over 300 hours to your training.
- 200+ hours for fire academy
- 40 hours for EMS
- 16 hours of ICS
- 40 hours for Hazmat

Time Commitment
Our volunteers are assigned to a specific shift (A, B, or C) and are required to work a minimum of 36 hours per month. All members - paid and volunteer - are subject to minimum continuing education and training requirements.
The Fire Academy includes training and certification through the level of Colorado State Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials-Operations, and First Responder.
Recruits successfully completing the Academy may elect to be sworn in and begin their volunteer service to the Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue at their graduation ceremony.
